桔梗科的学名Campanulaceae由模式属风铃草属学名Campanula的复合形式Campanul-加上表示科的等级后缀-aceae构成。该词为复数形式，故在做主语时应与动词的复数形式搭配。

本科中文名与模式属风铃草属中文名不一致。因为风铃草属虽然是日本原产属，但不如同科的桔梗属（Platycodon）更知名，故日本学者选用后者为本科命名，之后这一日文科名又被译为中文科名。
