词源

石竹科的学名Caryophyllaceae由模式属石竹属学名Dianthus的异名Caryophyllus的复合形式Caryophyll-加上表示科的等级后缀-aceae构成。该词为复数形式，故在做主语时应与动词的复数形式搭配。

本科中文名亦由模式属中文名“石竹属”中的专名“石竹”加上“科”字构成。

系统发生

石竹科传统上分为3亚科，即指甲草亚科（Paronychioideae）、繁缕亚科（Alsinoideae）和石竹亚科（Caryophylloideae）。尽管这3个亚科在宏观形态上有良好的界定，然而分子研究表明，它们无一是单系群。2011年的一项研究显示，指甲草亚科为高度的并系群，其中包括的4个分支依次位于基部位置。繁缕亚科为多系群，可以分成3个分支，其中一个分支是从无心菜属（Arenaria）分出的老牛筋属（Eremogone），嵌在石竹亚科中。 多识被子植物系统按这一结果修订了石竹科的分类系统，将全科重新划分为4亚科，12族（及族级类群）。

石竹科的分属，过去主要依赖花部的数目（如花柱的数目）等特征。分子研究表明，按照传统分类，几乎所有的大属都是不自然的。多识被子植物系统按照上述2011年的研究，结合已经发表的一些分类修订，对石竹科的系统发生做了全面调整。尽管如此，在下面的系统中，治疝草属（Hernaria）、卷耳属（Cerastium）、无心菜属（Arenaria）、蝇子草属（Silene）、膜萼花属（Petrorhagia）等属仍非单系群，广义繁缕属（Stellaria s. l.）有一些种仍无合适归属，还有一些属尚无分子数据。
