词源

紫草科的学名Boraginaceae由模式属玻璃苣属学名Borago的复合形式Boragin-加上表示科的等级后缀-aceae构成。该词为复数形式，故在做主语时应与动词的复数形式搭配。

本科中文名与模式属玻璃苣属中文名不一致，因为玻璃苣属非东亚原产，故日本学者另用东亚原产的紫草属（Lithospermum）命名，中国学者从之。

紫草科在APG IV系统（以及多识被子植物系统）中取广义概念，为紫草目的唯一科。但由一些学者组成的紫草目工作组（Boraginales Working Group）不同意这种处理，在2016年的论文中把广义紫草科拆分成了11个科。^[3]这些科的关系如下图如示。
