本科在APG III系统中叫黄脂木科（Xanthorrhoeaceae），但因这一科名的应用不如Asphodelaceae更广，在2017年的深圳植物学大会上，Asphodelaceae一名已经针对Xanthorrhoeaceae保留。

词源

阿福花科的学名Asphodelaceae由模式属阿福花属学名Asphodelus的复合形式Asphodel-加上表示科的等级后缀-aceae构成。该词为复数形式，故在做主语时应与动词的复数形式搭配。

本科中文名亦由模式属中文名“阿福花属”中的专名“阿福花”加上“科”字构成。

除归并入本科的芦荟科、山菅兰科、蒴菅兰科、蔓百合科、萱草科、苞花草科、麻兰科、黄脂木科之外，其它单纯的中文别名有日光兰科，以日光兰属（Asphodeline）命名。

多年生草本，通常具短的根状茎，或为多肉植物，稀为灌木状或大乔木状；叶基生或茎生，草质或肉质；总状、穗状、圆锥或聚伞花序，通常顶生；花被片6，排成2轮，离生或不同程度合生；雄蕊6，稀为3；子房上位，稀为半下位，3室，稀为1室，中轴胎座；果实为蒴果，稀为浆果、坚果或分果。
